United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres today visited Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
The secretary was welcomed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia Abshir Omar Jama Huruuse and the Acting Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations Anita Kiki Gbeho at the Aden Adde Airport.
Guterres was immediately escorted to the Somali presidency where he was received by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The Somali presidency said that the two leaders had fruitful talks. The President of Somalia thanked the Secretary General for the historic visit and the support that Somalia is facing in dealing with humanitarian challenges and the acceleration of the war against terrorism, as written on the Twitter page of the presidency.
The Somali government and aid agencies requested 2.6 billion dollars in February to help 7.6 million Somalis who need help this year.
The secretary called on donor countries to increase their aid to Somalia, and he said that 15% have now received the financial request.
